City University of Hong Kong accepts Cagape’s paper for presentation


Bringing in more opportunities to link up with established scholars, academics and researchers, the paper of Mr. Wendell Glenn Prajelis Cagape was accepted by the organizing committee for the 14th Conference of the International Association of World Englishes which will be held in the City University of Hong Kong from December 1-5, 2008.

His paper entitled, “Indigenizing the English Language, Localizing usage for Better Understanding” intends to explore the realities of the use of the English language in the Philippine setting. He opined that aside from English as a second language among Filipinos, its localized use is highly official and technical.

The announcement of the acceptance of Mr. Cagape’s paper was made by Dr. Ernest Shue Fung Lam, Conference Secretary who is the Chair of the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics of the City University of Hong Kong.

Mr. Cagape is a PhD Candidate from La Salle University and presently, the College/Board Secretary of the JH Cerilles State College. He is, at present, writing his dissertation entitled, “Human Safety in the Philippine Basic Education, A Model for Integrating Ergonomics into the Classroom”. He is also the Principal Researcher of a UNICEF-funded research project for the Province of Zamboanga del Sur entitled, “Educating Children at Risk: A Study on Factors affecting Cohort-Survival in Zamboanga del Sur”.

He has presented two of his doctoral researches abroad namely, “Islamicisation of the Philippine Public Basic Education Sector: Mainstreaming Madrasah Education” which he presented in the 1st International Language Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March this year and “Ethics in Test: Test Preparation and Administration in Philippine Education, A study in Zamboanga del Sur” which he presented in the 13th International Conference on Education in Brunei Darussalam in May this year.

Prior to his stint in the academe, he has served as the Provincial Information Officer of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur and as Communications Focal Officer for the UNICEF-funded Sixth Country Program for Children. He was also the Legislative Staff of the Office of Senator Edgardo J. Angara and has taught at the Department of Consular and Diplomatic Affairs of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.

He obtained his baccalaureate degree in Business Administration (Marketing) from the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology and his MA in Foreign Service from the Lyceum of the Philippines University in Intramuros, Manila. He has earned his PhD in Development Management from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City.
